Arunachal Pradesh to sign MoUs for boosting bamboo sector

ITANAGAR, Aug 23: Arunachal Pradesh will soon ink Memorandum of Understandings (MoUs) with Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) and Hindustan Paper Corporation to help potential bamboo growers in the state.

Arunachal Pradesh Bamboo Resource Development Agency (APBRDA) Vice-chairman Yora Tagung informed that the agency on behalf of the state government would sign an MoU with NRL soon for exporting three lakh tonnes of bamboo from the state.

"The MoU will immensely help both farmers as well as unemployed youths of the state," he said.

He informed that another MoU would also be signed between the state government and the Hindustan Paper Corporation for exporting one lakh tonne of bamboo for paper manufacturing.

"This is just a beginning. We are looking for more companies with whom we can sign MoUs for the benefit of bamboo growers and unemployed youths and enrich the state's coffer," Yora said.

If properly tapped, bamboo sector could be a money spinner for the state with a varieties of species abundantly available, Yora said adding that the Board was planning to set up small scale bamboo industries in every district where toothpicks, incense sticks, besides other usable items would be produced.

The APBRDA is contemplating to establish a bamboo shoot market for which a land of 70,000 square meters has already been allotted.

"We are also planning to set up a Bamboo Technology Park and State Bamboo Museum in the same plot," he said.

The steps taken by the Board would immensely benefit the people by spreading awareness regarding the actual benefit of bamboo plant, he said and added that the proposed MoUs would be a boon for the bamboo growers of the state. It is pertinent to mention here that since last couple of years, the APBRDA has been supplying bamboo saplings to the bamboo growers of all districts of the state.

Besides, several skill development and awareness programmes were also conducted.

"Though we have many bamboo plantations in every district, merely three small industries have been established so far which have failed to cater to the bamboo growers," Yora added.

Permanent solution of Siku bridge problem sought

Correspondent

PASIGHAT, Aug 23: The people of Mebo sub-division in East Siang and parts of Lower Dibang Valley and Lohit district, who have been suffering due to repeated breach of National Highway at Siku River have expressed their resentment against the Border Road Task Force (BRTF).

The right abutment of the RCC Bridge is breached by Siku River every year during monsoon disrupting road communication along the route. The BRTF entrusted in reconstruction of the highway is allegedly not applying the right technology in controlling course of Siku River near Mebo town. The 1443 BRTF, is reported to have  spent several crores of funds on diversion of river water during the last couple of years, but the turbulent Siku river has time and again proved the technology inefficient.

“The BRTF engineers are accustomed to arrange temporary arrangement of restoration or just plug the breached portion every time, but it has miserably failed to chalk out a permanent solution which is causing a great deal of dissatisfaction among the people. The BRTF engineers have neither chalked out an effective master plan for controlling the river course nor conducted scientific study on the natural factors in upstream of the river”, said Oling Perme, Mebo Banggo ZPM in a press statement.

Siku river, which has been eroding several acres of fertile land on its right bank, changing its course and taking its turn towards right, gripped several hectares of cropland at Ayeng village. The river has increased its size by tenfold over the last decade.

The RCC Bridge over Siku River has already completed nine years but there is no permanent embankment at its approaches to control water upstream water flow. The bridge along the highway is vital as the road connects entire Mebo Sub-division and parts of Lower Dibang Valley district with East Siang district headquarters at Pasighat.

The local PRI leaders have submitted petition to Union MoS for Home Affairs, Kiren Rijiju and higher ups of the Border Road Organization (BRO) demanding proper inquiry into the alleged irregularity and take appropriate steps.

Govt. planning more Doordarshan channels for N-E

New Delhi, Aug 23: With the government zooming in on development and progress of the North-East region, the Information and Broadcasting Ministry is planning to increase the number of Doordarshan channels in the region.

Ministry officials said at present there is only one 24X7 channel for the region and a proposal for its trifurcation is under consideration.

As per the proposal, there can be three 24X7 Doordarshan channels for the North-East: DD Arunprabha for Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim; one for Manipur, Mizoram and Nagaland; and a third channel for Assam and Meghalaya.

The officials said that since a single channel cannot meet the requirements of the rich and diverse cultures of the North-East, the need to increase the number of channels for this region has been long felt.

"It, however, is not an easy exercise since the diversity in the North-East is amazing. A single state like Manipur has several languages which are spoken there. It is felt that there should be a single channel for every state.

"But launching a new channel also bring with it questions related to availability of manpower, viability, content," a senior official said.

According a report tabled in Parliament recently, the Standing Committee on Information Technology was informed by the Information and Broadcasting Ministry about the proposal to trifurcate the existing North East channel. The Ministry also informed the Committee that starting three channels will also be a software intensive exercise as content will be required to be customised as per requirement of a particular state.

Asking the I&B Ministry to implement the proposal expeditiously, the parliamentary panel in its report urged the government to accord top priority to these projects and fix time-frame for their operationalisation.
